Psalm 123 holds our thought for today. It is only four verses long and reads:
"Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud."
Using the illustration of a servant awaiting instruction from his master or a maidservant watching for her mistress' every need, the psalmist encourages us to keep our eyes on the Lord, to be aware of how God is working, and to watch for the merciful fulfillment of His plan and promises.
The psalmist isn't necessarily waiting for instruction on what would please the Lord; his waiting is focused on need - the need for God's mercy because of the ugliness of the proudful scorners who live around him.
Oh, how the words and actions of the unbelieving world tend to dampen our hope and zeal. Our only recourse is to cast our eyes toward heaven and lift our hands in prayer as we wait for God to make all things right.
Dear friend, all creation groans for this to happen. This old earth is ready for its heavenly makeover, and the souls of God's children long for their eternal home. The burden of living among scorners and the contempt of the proud takes its toll, but we have a help - a precious help in the heavens upon which we can rely.
Are we looking up to Him? Are we calling upon His name and believing in His Word? Not one word will fail. All will be accomplished. Like the servant expecting to hear from the master or the anticipating maid, let's keep our eyes focused in the right place - waiting upon the Lord our God and looking to Him until He has mercy upon us.
